Karnataka Jesuits opted to work in Mundgod Taluka, since it was one of the most backward Talukas of Uttara Kannada district. While working for the welfare of the poor, the Jesuits felt the need of starting formal education with residential facilities. The poor transport facilities, seasonal migration total illiteracy in some of the villages and absence of schools close-by had kept the people away from formal education. So Loyola institutions were established in Mundgod with a motto of educating the economically and socially deprived people of this region.
